It is a prayer used at weddings, funerals, and many other church services around the world for congregations of people to pray together at the same time, using the same spoken words.
Jesus talked to his disciples about prayer, teaching them on a mountain what has come to be known as ‘The Lords Prayer’. Many use it as a set prayer to pray. Others use it as a model for praying.
Matthew 6: 9-13 (NIV):
‘This, then, is how you should pray:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
In a series of posts following this one, I will use the elements found within Lord’s prayer as a basis to pray for the Royal Family.
Pray:
Thank you, Jesus, for teaching your disciples on the Mount how to pray. It is an example I can use and follow, along with many people around the world. Thank you that this teaching has helped millions of people over the centuries and will continue doing so into the future.
I thank you for the prayer’s contents and how it contains elements of adoration, petition, thanksgiving and confession. The way it touches on my relationship with not only You, O God, but towards others too reminds me that relationships are important to You. I want to thank you for my relationship with You as my Heavenly Father, and for the relationships I have around me.
Thank you for the way the Lord’s Prayer assists people to pray. This is especially the case if they feel they have no words of their own or don’t know where to start talking to you. For those lost for words, warm their hearts with the words in this well-known prayer. Remind or lead them to it when they need it.
As a prayer that the Royal family know well, I pray that whenever they repeat the words, they would be full of life and meaning like never before. May the words of the Lord’s prayer impact not only their relationship with You, but that of those around them. Lord boldly I ask that their prayers touch many nations of the world. As the Royal Chaplains pray with members of the Royal Family and the Royal Household using this prayer, bring it to life like never before. Make this prayer, used by the Royal Family, like that of a caterpillar unfurling from a chrysalis into a beautiful butterfly. Lord, I want to see prayers from the Royal Family rise to your heavenly throne as incense to You as it says in the book of Revelation in the Bible.
Lord, make the Lord’s Prayer, used at so many services attended by the Royal Family not be spoken out of tradition and rhetoric, but out of a desire to pray. Awaken them Lord in a mighty way to pray for themselves, their loved ones, and the nation that they serve. Lord hear my cries.
‘May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.’ Psalm 19:14
In Jesus’ name, I ask and pray
Amen
