Our Father in Heaven

The first line of the Lord’s Prayer writes. ‘Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your Name.’

Like addressing a letter, email or message, this is the focus of the first part of the Lord’s Prayer. This address includes:

  • God being our Father
  • God being in Heaven
  • God’s name being sacred and holy

Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father, you gave your disciples a way of praying and how to start. Addressing you as my Father in heaven is a bold introduction. In our world, the word ‘father’ brings up different connotations. There are fathers who are absent: having passed away, unknown or estranged. Then there are Fathers who are present. Fatherhood throughout history can be outworked and demonstrated well or not so well. As I look through the Bible, this is true there too. Whatever my understanding or experience, Lord, you want me to call you my heavenly Father – a Father who lives in heaven.

‘Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:9-11

You long, Father God, to give me good gifts when I come to you as a little child and ask in a child-like way. Lord, I pray that the members of the Royal family would find out that you are their heavenly Father who loves to give good gifts to them, his children. Father God, as their Heavenly Father, please bestow good gifts on them, in a loving and meaningful way to demonstrate to each one that you care for them. Help each one who has the responsibility of being a Father. Give them wisdom Lord.

‘Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.’ Ecclesiastes 5:2

As I consider heaven and how it’s described in the Bible as a place that is where Your resplendent beauty is displayed, I am amazed. Pondering the words above, I wonder if I should say anything to you. You know me from the inside out and my mind cannot fathom Your greatness and holiness. When Royal jewels are exhibited, even if they were all displayed at the same time, heaven’s glory would be nothing in comparison. Therefore I hallow your name – I honour it because of who You are, Father God. I pray that the Royal family would also learn how great, good and awesome you are. May their response be ‘Wow!’ as they learn of Your attributes, character and love for each one of them.

‘When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God’ Exodus 3:4-6

[.. the encounter continues as Moses is asked to go on a big assignment to ask for the freedom of his people…]

‘Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3: 12-14

Moses was bold to ask You what Your name was, and you told him. Father God, I pray that the members of the Royal family would ask you directly too. Give them an encounter with you that is mind-blowing, just as it was with Moses. May your name be one that is revered in the mouths and hearts of the Royal Family. Encourage them to seek you out, to find you in the secret place of their homes.

Just as Moses found out how holy and sacred You were, God, I pray that your holy presence would permeate the Royal Residences. Lord, I pray that those who work in the Residences would sense your mighty power, your love and your presence in such a tangible way – like never before. Visit each member of the Royal Family in a mighty way that they cannot deny your mighty name and your presence. Moses saw this strange sight of a bush burning, yet it was not burning up and was curious. Father, draw the members of the Royal family to you with a curiosity and desire that they can’t fathom. Send people to them, draw people around them that can guide them to you in a meaningful and private manner.

I want to say thank you for being my Father in Heaven. I revere your name.
Amen.
