When a Grandchild has children of their own, the Grandparents become Great-Grandparents. With people living longer, this is becoming more common. This is true of the Royal Family as both Her Majesty and HRH Prince Philip are nonagenarians, i.e. between 90-100 years old.
This age range within a family adds a different dimension to a family. It increases the amount of history that can be shared directly. Great-Grandchildren are a great source of joy for Great-Grandparents. This will be true of Her Majesty and HRH Prince Philip.
‘Aren’t great-grandparents just older versions of grandparents? No, says Smith. At the most basic level, just by being alive, great-grandparents have a role. They provide a link with the past, making history real and giving kids a sense of family continuity….”Great-grandparents can fulfil the family historian role, reflecting on the history of the wider society as well,” says Smith. “They have accumulated a lot of wisdom and understanding of the family situation.”‘ An article from The Guardian 2007
Let’s pray:
‘I [The Lord] will cause your descendants to become as numerous as the stars of the sky, and I will give them all these lands. And through your descendants, all the nations of the earth will be blessed.’ Genesis 26:4 NLT
Thank you, Jesus, that each generation has both wisdom and history which can add value to the generations that follow them. As people live longer within the Royal Family we pray that a greater value will be added as one generation recounts one to another their family stories.
Just as the Lord told Abram to look up and count the stars, we pray that the Royal family will look up to you. You are the source of all history and from whom the next generations come. It is not to be taken for granted, and so we thank you, Lord, that Her Majesty can watch her great-grandchildren grow up.
Lord, we praise you that Her Majesty is blessed with five great-grandchildren with another great-grandchild expected next year. We pray that through Her Majesty, her descendants will be blessed, touching many nations and peoples of the world. Great is her reward for her faithfulness in serving her people and her Saviour.
‘I will sing of the Lord’s unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. Your unfailing love will last forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens. The Lord said, “I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant. I have sworn this oath to him: ‘I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’” Psalm 89: 1-4 NLT
We pray that your faithfulness, O God, will be talked of for all the royal generations to come. Great is your faithfulness, especially to Her Majesty and HRH Prince Philip. May they sing and proclaim this truth where they are able, especially within the privacy of their homes, telling of what you have done for them as a family and institution. Just as you swore to King David in the Bible, we pray that you would establish royal descendants on the British Throne for years to come. Lord, may they be kings and queens who know you, Father God, as their friend and closest advisor because of the walk and witness of Her Majesty.
Great-grandchildren bring a sense of fun and of youth to the Great-Grandparents. Pour into the relationship of Great Grandparents to Great Grandchildren laughter, fun, excitement, and energy that they can enjoy. May this special relationship from the oldest to the youngest be one which provides mutual encouragement all round.
Lord Jesus, long may this Great-Grandparent relationship continue for many years to come. In your name, we ask,
Amen.
